A local icon since 1914, Claremont Drapers was a mainstay in Bay View Terrace, that is until recently.
Claremont Drapers is no stranger to adversity. About 7 years ago the shop almost closed it’s doors when the previous owner decided to retire after 42 wonderful years running the business.
However as a Claremont local I couldn’t sit back and watch a shop that had served 5 generations of customers and been a community landmark for decades simply close. So I took the plunge and took over the business.
However in late 2006 Claremont Drapers faced adversity once again. The trust that ensured the building could not be sold was broken and the owners were determined to sell.
There was an outcry from the community at the shocking news. “What! You cannot close Claremont Drapers, it belongs here!” were the sentiments echoed by all. “It’s a living museum of retail and social history”.
And so the community rallied, local residents and Perth businesses pledged $160,000 in 3 weeks, and I would like to personally thank all of those who endeavoured to support us. However there was simply not enough time, the building was sold and Claremont Drapers were moved out.
But the spirit lingers.
